An adaptive Route Optimization for Inter-Cluster Hand Scheme in Wireless ATM Networks

Recently, a two-phase handoff protocol has been adopted to support the rerouting of the connection after intercluster handoff. It employs rapid path extension for the first phase, followed by path optimization to establish the new connection in the second phase. The path optimization becomes costly in terms of the signaling and processing load on the ATM network in order to determine the optimal path. In this paper we propose an adaptive path optimization scheme in which the path optimization is performed with a fixed probability after each path extension. We propose a fast handoff management scheme based on the reservation of Permanent Virtual Channels (PVCs) between any two adjacent Mobility Enhanced Switches (MESs) in order to facilitate a seamless inter-cluster handoff. The main objective of our adaptation scheme is to minimize the signaling and processing load while maximizing the utilization of the network resources. The simulation model is presented to evaluate the overall system performance in terms of wired link resources and route optimization processing load.
